MAIN THREAD: Serial Killers and General Discussion

Image
So this week we're gonna dive into the disturbing world of serial killers. I'm not a serial killer "buff" by any means, but I do get into true crime, and I do watch some documentaries about them to see how twisted some people can actually be. I don't praise them or get infatuated with them like some weirdos out there do, like those chicks that write to them in prison wanting to marry them, or fanboys who obsess over them like they're some kind of role models, and sick crap like that.  Buncha disturbed, warped nutters. Regardless, they have gained a sort of "notoriety", and their cases have drummed up continued interest over the years.  Cannibalism, murder, rape, torture, confinement, abduction, you name it, all have been committed by one serial killer or another.  Some of the more infamous are Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, Charles Manson, Ed Gein, the Zodiac Killer, the "Night Stalker" Richard Ramirez, and the Green River Killer Gary Ri...

OLD THREAD: Anime (sigh) and All General Discussion

Image
Well, the day has finally arrived.   This non-anime watcher is posting an anime thread. We have a number of anime watchers on the site, one of whom was introduced to it right'chere at PiTG, so I figured it was time to give 'em their own thread. Anime is a plentiful genre these days.  It was present in the 80s, gained traction in the 90s, and built from there, and it's pretty mainstream now.  There's even a disturbing amount of X-rated anime out there with a cult following behind it.  In the 80s you had things like Voltron and Robotech, and even Transformers and Gobots, and more, in the kids' arena.  But you also had things like the groundbreaking adult oriented Akira movie being released. The 90s saw things like PokĂ©mon and Digimon and even the live action Power Rangers and more come to the forefront. You saw the anime influence becoming more prevalent.  Things like Ninja Scroll, Princess Mononoke, Cowboy Bebop, and Neon Genesis Evangelion and mo...

OLD THREAD: It's Time for a New Year! And General Discussion

Image
Well, it's time for the New Year's thread! Time to say goodbye to 2024 and welcome in 2025.  It's definitely going to be an interesting one, to say the least.  New Year's Day is another time of year with a special, magical feeling. It's a time to celebrate the previous year (or celebrating its end, depending on how it went), and the hopes and dreams that the new year might hold. It's a time for the traditional Times Square countdown and giant ball drop, as well as yet another reason to congregate and consume mass quantities of alcohol.  It is symbolically depicted by Father Time and Baby New Year, and represents the ushering in of a new year's dawn and the hope that better things are on the horizon.  It's also a time to make new year's resolutions in order to hopefully improve as a person. (I can think of a few people out in Disqusland who could use that kind of improvement.) Moving on, I would be remiss if I didn't address the elephant in the r...

OLD THREAD: It's Christmas Time! And General Discussion

Image
Well, it's the week of Christmas, so it's time for the main Christmas thread! Christmas is my favorite holiday, by far. I still love the ideal of the "Christmas spirit", good will towards humankind, the special emotional feeling and positive attitude of the season, all the things that a number of people seem to have lost sight of.  The atmosphere of peace on earth in general still resonates with me during this magical time of year. Decorations, Christmas lights, food, presents, family coming together, being kinder to strangers, the music, the movies, the wonder, the spirit of giving, all of it is just a great thing to be a part of.  We also cannot forget the reason for the season (even though the time of year has long been debated), the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Sure, maybe the story around it and the timeframe is contested, but to those nitpickers and naysayers I say "Bah, humbug".  Let it stand for what it stands for. Anywho, there are many traditi...

OLD THREAD: Christmas Food, Decorations, and Miracles. And General Discussion.

Image
Well, we have a three topic Christmas thread this week.  Food, decorations, and miracles. First off, Christmas food.  There are so many different Christmas foods, recipes, and candies, it would be difficult to make a satisfactory list.  I mean, you have the staples from Thanksgiving like turkey, ham, stuffing, etc, but also roast goose, Christmas cookies, cakes, pies, gingerbread, eggnog, figgy pudding, regional fare, the list goes on and on.  Heck, you even have entire baking and cooking show episodes dedicated solely to Christmas themed recipes (insert Great British Baking Show plug here). I'll just let the comment section handle the specifics.  Moving on to decorations, this is a longstanding holiday tradition. Of course you have the traditional Christmas tree, ornaments, stockings, and such, but you also have houses and yards adorned with lights and lawn ornaments of all types, and even local businesses dedicating their grounds to drive through Christm...

OLD THREAD: Christmas Music and General Discussion

Image
Well, it's time to move on from one mainstay of the holidays to another, from Christmas movies to Christmas music. I loves me some Christmas music.  Christmas music is as synonymous to the season as mistletoe and jolly old Saint Nick himself.  Most of them are great and never get old, but there are one or two that people have admitted they are tired of hearing (cough Mariah Carey cough cough). One of my personal all time favorites is the Jimmy Durante Frosty the Snowman.  That version rules. Now I could sit here and list songs all day, from White Christmas to Hark the Herald Angels Sing to Jingle Bells to a Christmas in Hollis to the album A Twisted Christmas.....  but instead I'll simply post a few tunes. What are some of your favorite Christmas tunes?  Drop some of em here, and also talk about errything else.
