Old Thread: Beans: A Versatile Superfood! And general discussion.

Beans are considered a “superfood” because they are one of the most nutritious foods you can eat.

The site I got that quote from actually has a tremendously informative article about beans, so I won't try to outdo them.  Here's the link:

 https://www.umassmed.edu/nutrition/Cardiovascular/handouts/beans/

One good thing about most beans - like kidney, black, lentils, or pinto, for example - is that you can cook them until they're soft enough and incorporate them into other dishes, like casseroles for instance. (Or just add them, in the case of green beans.)

They're also used in drinks, coffee being the main one, and even everybody's favorite dessert flavors, chocolate and vanilla.
But why would somebody consider beans racist? Yes, I get that the name of the food, combined with "er", is a racially derogatory slur.  But other than that?  No. I even verified with a Google search, in case I missed the memo.

If you call somebody a bean "head", for instance, that refers to the shape of their head resembling the shape of a bean.  Pretty simple, right? People of any race can have bean shaped heads, and I've heard many a "white folk" get called bean head in my lifetime.

So why would somebody consider that racist?  If their basis for accusation is because of the "er" word I mentioned earlier, that would actually make the accuser the racist one, since he - or she - was taking a basic reference and associating it with the slur.

That would mean I couldn't even say the word bean, even when discussing food dishes, in front of anybody of a different race. Which is just so ridiculously absurd and nonsensical it's not even funny.

But back to the food.  Beans are a magnificent superfood, and people should incorporate more of them into their diet. People also should not be ashamed to talk about them, even in reference to a person's head shape.  As a matter of fact, being called a "bean head" should be taken as a compliment, given the amazing versatility and benefits they provide.
