OLD THREAD: Movie List and general discussion

Image
So I'm gonna adapt the concept of the last music thread to movies.  With a tweeest. So the idea is to come up with your top 20 ultimate movie and TV show list. You know, if stranded on a deserted island, or holed up in a bunker during nuclear armageddon, or if you could only pick 20 to watch for the rest or your life, blah blah blah.  Here's the twist.  You can name movie series. For example, if you say Lord of the Rings, Die Hard, Harry Potter, etc, that includes all the movies in that series.  For the tv shows, you get all seasons in that show. It does NOT mean you can say "Avengers" or "Infinity War" and get the whole MCU 1st wave. You could, however, say Captain America and get the First Avenger, Winter Soldier, and Civil War. In the case of something like Spider Man, you could pick which series of movies (Holland, Maguire, Garfield), or you could get them all. Same with Batman. But only the movies. If you pick the TV show, or the animated movies or sho...

OLD THREAD: Traveling Through History and any General Discussion

Image
So Bass came up with a good general concept to kick off the week.  Just remember, this is merely the blog discussion topic.  You can also talk about anything else (within reason). If you could travel back in time - GREAT SCOTT! - where would you go to?  What would you do? We're going to go with the premise that the Time Variance Authority would give everybody the same freebie up front, since the majority of people would go back to biblical times to see Jesus for whatever reason.  So that's a gimme, and everybody is given the opportunity to do that right out of the gate.  So, after that initial time hop, what eras or historical events would you go visit?  Just for fun, we'll start with a top 5 or 10, and then discuss from there (or else people will just say "everywhere"). We're also gonna say aging is slowed, so you could visit a place for more than just a short while if desired. Obviously this is just a guideline; if you think of any other tweaks just...

OLD THREAD: Music Top 20 and all general discussion

Image
TUNE!  So Book had an interesting twist on the music topic since I already posted a thread about it a little while back. I mean, I'll definitely have to revisit topics here and there, that's a given, but I'll try to tweak things here and there and keep it as fresh as I possibly can. Now, then. Enough rambling.  The idea is pretty simple, post your top 20 songs. The songs you love to listen to over and over - or just 20 of your top songs if you have a lot of faves spanning different genres. Doesn't have to be all at once, you can post a couple now then a couple later, whatever you want, but let us hear some of your best of the best. You can number them if you like, and if you have a story behind one or two, feel free to share that as well if you want. And you don't have to stop at 20.  We just want to see your top picks first.  If you're in a zone, then by all means keep going.  Hell, post 100 for all I care. 😆 As always, this is just one conversation topic. Cha...

OLD THREAD: Wildlife/animals and any general discussion

Image
This week's thread deals with the basic subject of animals.  Whether it's the wild beasts of the forests or the seas, or the docile, cute house pets that make the internet say "awwwwwwww", they're all fair game (you see what I did there?) in this thread. I've always liked the oddball animals.  Creatures such as the platypus, the pangolin, anteaters, aardvarks, gorillas, and the hammerhead shark (because of its cool, odd looking noggin) were the ones that drew my attention as a youngster. As far as domesticated animals, I'm an animal person so I like em all, but I particularly liked dogs such as bulldogs, Boston terriers, and bull terriers (see: Spuds MacKenzie. I may or may not have this poster... ) and cats such as siamese and balinese. What are some of your favorite animals?  What are some wildlife facts you like to share?  Nothing is off limits, so go nuts (Get it? Nuts? Squirrels? Ah, they can't all be winners). And, as always, this is just the ge...

OLD THREAD: Recipes and, of course, any general discussion

Image
So this is for our pillar Booker.  He requested a recipe thread, so I'm delivering. Remember, this is just the general post thread.  Discuss anything else you want (within reason, of course).   Recipes are great to look at, try out, and share.  I've tried many throughout the years, from cookbooks, to Facebook posts, to ones from baking shows I've watched.  I've even come up with my own weird concoctions.  Two recipes I've made, for example, were a dreamsicle cheesecake and a Prinsesstårta that I saw made on the Great British Baking Show.  I made it for the family Christmas one year and it came out great. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/prinsesstrta_17336/amp I tweaked the recipe by using store bought marzipan (a mistake; had to buy multiple packages of it and heat it in the microwave to soften it enough to join them together and roll flat) and also adding vanilla extract to the whipped cream layer. The dreamsicle chee...

OLD THREAD: Martial Arts movies and general discussion

Image
So this week's basic topic is martial arts, or "kung fu", movies.  Of course, this is just the general thread topic of the week, don't forget.  Discuss anything else you like as well.  I've had a love for kung fu movies since my teenage years.  First by seeing Kung Fu Theater on USA when I visited my grandma (we couldn't get cable; she had it) and then later when I got into martial arts and got introduced to Jackie Chan specifically, and others. Jackie is my all time favorite in the genre. Also my favorite actor in general.  I love how he incorporated comedy into his movies, while still keeping the hard hitting kung fu action.   I was introduced to his movies through Fearless Hyena, which is probably one of the best to have been introduced to him with.  It's an amazing blend of action and comedy to this day. I'm also a huge fan of Drunken Master. I was happy when he finally made his successful break into the American market in the 90s starti...

OLD THREAD: Old school video games, board games, and general discussion

Image
So I decided to lump board games together with old school video games.  Why?  Why the fuck not.  When I mention "old school" video games, I'm talking old school.  As in Sega Genesis, original NES, Super NES, N64, Atari, ColecoVision, Intellivision, PS1.  PS2, tops. So many awesome games to discuss, like Super Mario. Duck Hunt. Bubble Bobble. Gauntlet. Tetris. Rampage. Pac Man. Donkey Kong. Asteroids. Dig Dug. Burgertime. Pitfall. Frogger. Qbert. Mappy. PGA Tour 96. Sonic. Mario Golf.  Just to name a few. Moving on to board games (for our more older heads), there are so many great games that have been played over the years and still are.  Monopoly, Sorry, Trouble, Trivial Pursuit, Chutes and Ladders, Scrabble. Checkers. Chess. Connect Four.  Uncle Wiggily.   Speaking of chess, I would be remiss not to mention Hnefatafl, a viking chess game that SciFi Jim just recently mentioned in our thread.  This genre of games can even inclu...
