MAIN THREAD: Memorial Day and General Discussion

Well, it's Memorial Day time and I figured I'd actually write a new thread about it.  Just the basic history, etc, blah blah blah.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, originated in the years following the American Civil War to honor fallen soldiers and was established as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with spring flowers.

Originally created to mourn only Union soldiers who died in the Civil War, the holiday was expanded after World War I to honor American service members who lost their lives in all conflicts. Although the day gradually came to be known as Memorial Day, it wasn't officially declared a federal holiday by an act of Congress until 1971 and the date of observance was moved from its traditional May 30 date to the last Monday in May.

Fun fact: Inspired by the famous World War I poem "In Flanders Fields," professor Moina Michael championed the sale of silk and paper poppies to raise funds for disabled veterans, cementing the poppy as a universal symbol of remembrance (not to be confused with the wicked witch's poppy field in the Wizard of Oz. Dirty bitch!).

So let's take the time to observe the men and women who sacrificed their lives. Some wars are considered necessary, others not, but they fought for a cause they felt (or were led to believe) was just.

Lightening the mood time - also talk about any other damn thing you want, from broads to Broadway to pro rasslin' and more!
